Rapids face all three NISL teams in big weekend

By: Alex Husting

The Columbus Rapids will be back inside the Columbus Civic Center for a big three-game weekend against the entire NISL. The Rapids will face the Memphis Americans on Friday at 5:30 p.m. EST and then right back on the pitch against the Fayetteville Fury on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. EST. Columbus will wrap up the weekend series with a Sunday showdown with the Rome Gladiators at 3:30 p.m. EST.

The Rapids Men are entering the weekend on a two-match losing streak, with a 6-1 loss to the Fury last weekend in Columbus. They are currently third in the NISL with a record of 1-6, that one win coming in a 3-2 victory over Rome on January 17. As for their opponents, the Americans are the hottest team in the league.

Winners of two straight, Memphis (7-2)  is looking to extend their lead in the Men’s division with a win over the Rapids. They have outscored Columbus 27-7 in their previous meetings, winning all four matches.

The Fury Men have struggled since defeating Columbus last weekend, losing two straight to the Americans in Memphis, each by just one goal. Fayetteville started the year 6-0 and now will be looking to get back to their winning ways and keep pace with the Americans. In the two matchups with Columbus, the Fury have outscored the Rapids 17-2.

The Rome Men (0-4) have been competitive this season, losing each match by three goals or fewer, but they have been unable to break through and get a win. The matchup on Sunday with the Rapids will be their first in nearly a month and a number of changes could have been made between the loss against the Fury on January 23 and now.

The Rapids Women are coming off their second win of the season and looking to find more success on their home pitch. They are also third in the NISL Women’s Division with a 2-5 record and a goal differential of -13. However, if you take out the 10-2 loss to the Fury to open the season, that goal differential shrinks to -5 and the Rapids Women have been competitive in every match this season.

The Americans Women, like the Men’s team, are first in the NISL Women’s Division with a 8-1 and winners of six straight matches. Their last loss actually came inside the Columbus Civic Center in a close 5-4 loss to the Rapids. Since that loss, the Americans have outscored opponents 24-10 during their winning streak.
The Fury Women’s team has struggled so far this season, with seven straight losses since a 5-3 season opening win against the Rapids. Since that win, Fayetteville has been outscored 41-11, including two losses to the Gladiators by a combined score of 19-4. They have split the series with the Rapids.

The Rome Women’s team (3-1) comes into Columbus as winners of three straight since a loss to the Americans to open the season. They are second in the NISL Women’s Division and have outscored opponents by a margin of 23-6 during their winning streak. They will be looking to keep pace with the first-place Americans this weekend.
